New 2012 Mercedes Benz G-Class Review

The 2012 Mercedes Benz G-Class is a sport utility vehicle that is one of the most rugged in its class that still maintains a great deal of luxury. It was originally designed as a four-wheel drive means of transportation for the military that was heavy-duty in nature but over the years has been updated with all of the latest trimmings that Mercedes has to offer transforming it into an attractive and refined luxury vehicle. Weighing in at nearly three tons, it is a rather tall vehicle with an exceptional spacious interior yet has a rather laborious handling.

The exterior design of the Mercedes Benz G-Class is very basic with flat sides, a nearly vertical windshield, an overall boxy shape and 18-inch alloy wheels. The interior is similar in style and design displaying somewhat awkward ergonomics with rugged shapes, door panels that are flat and a great deal of glass but enhanced with premium leather grade upholstery, walnut and chrome trim, a leather padded dash, climate control with two zones, interior ambient lighting and a combined wood and leather heated steering wheel. Other luxury accoutrements inside the Mercedes Benz G-Class include a six-disc CD/DVD changer, an interface for the iPod and MP3 players, a hard drive four Gigabytes in size with Music Register, and a Harmon/Kardon LOGIC7 system.

The engine in the Mercedes Benz G-Class is a 5.5 liter dual overhead cam engine with a 32 valve V8. Three-hundred eighty-two horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque are produced by the engine. The transmission is an automatic transmission with seven speeds and the drive is all-wheel drive with locking differentials for the front, center and rear. An additional Electronic Stability Program makes for an extraordinary off-road capability. The vehicle can go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in six seconds.

The Mercedes Benz G-Class seats five and has a trunk capacity of 79.5 cubic feet. The seats themselves are comfortable, with front seats that have memory for ten power adjustments. The rear seats can be split and folded and both the front and rear seats are heated and ventilated.

Despite its tank-like mass, the Mercedes Benz G-Class handles well on the highway with a comfortable ride which suffers to some extent when dealing with corners. It can also be somewhat difficult to handle if you plan to drive it around town for running errands. Its off-road capabilities show another side to the vehicle, with its ability to overcome just about any terrain that you wish to explore. Yet its luxury features combined with excellent materials and a quality finish make it a vehicle worth investigating.
